Steganography takes cryptography a step further and instead of just having a simple code to decipher, the code is hidden within something else. A common form of this is digital steganography where messages are hidden within the file. Here is a great example that I found on a steganography wiki. If you can't see the images click on the link to the wiki and the images will be on the right side of the page. Image of a tree. Removing all but the 2 least significant bits of eachcolor component produces an almost completely black image. Making that image 85 times brighter produces the image below.Image of a cat extracted from above image.
So basically this cat image is hidden within the tree picture. You just have to follow the directions above and mess around with the tree picture. You could also hide text within an image too. This type of steganography can be useful when sending a message to somebody through somebody else you don't want reading or seeing your message. It is also fun if you are clever with computers and can figure out how to encrypt a message in an image. Personally it is way over my head. This is also controversial today because hidden threats could be hidden within. Viruses could also be encoded within the digital file. There are not many cases of these threats today but they could grow and develop into something we might want to watch out for. (nfoltz).
